Tips for Undergoing Fasting for People with High Blood Pressure

Fasting during Ramadan is an obligation for Muslims, which can provide many health benefits. One of them is to reduce high blood pressure. For those of you who suffer from high blood pressure and want to get these benefits, consider the following fasting tips for people with high blood pressure. Basically, people with high blood pressure (hypertension) may fast during Ramadan. People with high blood pressure can also fast, as long as they do not have serious complications. Besides being an obligation, changes in diet and sleep during fasting can help lower blood pressure in people with mild and moderate hypertension.

Fasting Tips for People with High Blood Pressure

The following are tips for fasting for people with high blood pressure:

1. Go to a doctor

Patients with hypertension are advised to carry out routine checks to the doctor, including before fasting. This aims to monitor the condition of hypertension that you experience. After that, the doctor can decide whether you are allowed to fast or not. To control blood pressure, your doctor can also prescribe antihypertensive drugs for you.

2. Meet the needs of body fluids

Meeting the needs of body fluids when fasting is important to do. In addition to preventing dehydration and helping the body's metabolism, adequate fluid levels will also help control blood pressure. Fill your body's fluid needs by drinking eight glasses of water a day, which can be shared at dawn and breaking. Limit consumption of caffeinated beverages, such as coffee, tea, and soft drinks, because caffeine can increase blood pressure.

3. Increase consumption of vegetables and fruit

Make vegetables and fruit as your menu for dawn and breaking fast. This is because vegetables and fruits contain potassium which can reduce the effects of sodium or salt on blood pressure. Some types of foods that contain lots of potassium are bananas, oranges, melons, cantaloupe, eggplants, cucumbers, and green vegetables.

4. Limit foods that are high in salt

Eating foods with high salt content, both at dawn and breaking the fast, is not recommended for people with hypertension. This is because salt can trigger a rise in blood pressure quickly. Therefore, limit the amount of salt intake in food at least 2 grams per day, or about one teaspoon.

5. Do exercise regularly

When fasting, you should still exercise regularly. Exercising regularly can help lower and stabilize blood pressure in people with hypertension. When fasting, choose sports with a mild intensity, such as walking, swimming, or cycling. Do this exercise regularly, for 30 minutes every day. Until now, there has been no research that prohibits people with high blood pressure to fast during Ramadan. However, live fasting under the supervision of a doctor and apply the various fasting tips above. If during fasting you experience complaints, do not hesitate to consult a doctor.
